Mick Brooks Letter to members (0 Replies)

I would like to thank all at NAHT for mounting the anti-SATs campaign. Whilst I share concerns of other members over timing I realise that the NAHT had to act when it did because of legal constraints. Whilst I understand and applaud the Council for trying to reach a negotiated agreement with Government, we should not lose the position we have established this year - and if necessary repeat the action again next year. I will never take industrial action that has an adverse impact on the children in my school - but in this case any action taken is to the advantage of children and the education system as a whole. KS2 SATS (3 Replies)

I am responding to share our schools experience of SATs after reading the NAHT website. I am head at a challenging school in Rotherham and in recent years have been 'Hard to ft' and 'ISP'. We have a high mobility rate, large numbers of SEN and in this years' Y6 8 children who came to England from Slovakia with no English within the last 18 months. Our teacher assessment enables us to prove our children have made satisfactory or good progress. The SATs results show a different picture. Children have missed achieving a level 4 by a couple of marks. I do not believe the SATs show a true reflection of the ability of the children. Lets hope this is the last year we will be putting children and staff through the stress. I now have to face a battle with my LA to prove we are not a school of concern due to our results. Again it is unnecessary stress on myself. Yours Amanda Bartholomew Head teacher

SSA Scottish Survey Of Achievement (3 Replies)

Colleagues if you have not seen details of the annual national sampling of pupils' attainment in the Scottish 5-14 curriculum have a look. Go to www.scotland.gov.uk or google Scottish Survey of Achievement. Currently surveys cover English Language 2005, Social subjects (enquiry skills) 2006, Science 2007, Mathematics 2008. Could this be a way forward?

Children's Voice (1 Replies)

After reading the children's comments about how they felt once the SATs were over, just made me more determined to fight for a change in the present assessment system. How can any Government think that SATs are a good way of assessing children when the children themselves are so adversely affected by them? The Government would appear to be finding it difficult to trust the opinions of school leaders and teachers but surely they must be willing to listen to the opinions of our children?

The Conservative party 'opening shot' in the KS2 assessment campaign (0 Replies)

Michael Gove has certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons by suggesting KS2 tests could move to KS3 in a new form with them being marked internally! The devil however is in the detail as is often the case - league tables remain with children's progress in KS2 being potentially in the hands of KS3 colleagues. No apparent mention of the importance and status of teacher assessment at KS2. Would OFSTED use primary school data or rely upon the new KS3 tests? SIPs? What this move certainly does is increase the pressure on Mr Balls and company. It will be interesting to see how this develops.
