No. 1 – Pay and appraisal in 2017/18
This academic year, the task of managing the pay review process and pay recommendations will be particularly challenging for school leaders. However, it is important to remember that the (broken) pay system you have to work with is a product of government; it is not of your making. To help support you through what was a challenging autumn term, we put together a model pay policy, a model staff appraisal and capability policy, and a pay policy guidance document to help you navigate through the process. We hope you found these documents useful and that they continue to support you through your next steps.
No. 2 – Model lockdown procedures
We hope you never need to implement a lockdown, but it is best to be prepared to keep your pupils and staff safe from threat or danger. Our advice will help you to develop a policy and practice that ensures your school can effectively move to a status of 'lockdown' and, more importantly, how it can discharge its duty of care to pupils, staff, visitors and parents.
No. 3 – Parental complaints
Managing parental complaints can be challenging for school leaders. Our invaluable guide will show you how to deal with a complaint from parents. It looks at what you should do in this event, what is reasonable and what we can do to help. Our advice team can advise you on your approach when called to an investigation meeting and will walk you through the process. If necessary, we can arrange for one of our reps to accompany you to the investigation meeting or panel hearing.
No 4. – FAQs on excluding pupils from school
Excluding a pupil from your school is one of the most difficult things, as a school leader, you may have to go through. However, the power to exclude is at the disposal of school leaders because their first duty is to protect those under their control. Our advice, launched in light of new statutory guidance that came into effect on 1 September 2017, steers you through the exclusion process and the things that matter when you intend to exclude a child under your control. The guide has also been produced to protect you from the inevitable challenges you are likely to face in the event of an exclusion and how best these might be mitigated.
No 5. – Part-time working in schools
Your school is likely to be made up of staff on a variety of contractual arrangements: some full-time, some part-time, some term-time and so on. Each group of staff is also likely to be protected by a relevant piece of legislation and best practice. Our advice will guide you through the statutory and practice frameworks for part-time members of staff, look at how you can maximise your school's resources and explain how to protect yourself against any challenge if an employee raises objections to their treatment.
