Job share and flexible working - NAHT guidance

This guidance applies to all maintained schools, academies, free schools and independent schools.

There has been a marked increase over recent years in part-time working in schools. NAHT receives enquiries, not only from members with teachers returning from maternity leave, but also from members who wish to reduce their own working hours for a variety of reasons, such as phasing down towards retirement; to create time in which to study for additional qualifications; or achieving an improved work/life balance.

All schools should adopt a flexible working policy. The LA (maintained schools) is likely to have such a policy but NAHT has also published a model policy, available from the members-only section of our website at www.naht.org.uk. The model policy and this guidance are compliant, and based on, legislation on flexible working introduced with effect from 30 June 2014.
