What governing bodies should expect from school leaders and what school leaders should expect from governing bodies

This document was first developed by NAHT, ASCL and the National Governors' Association in 2008, and this latest revision brings it up to date as the school governance landscape has continued to evolve. This new edition reflects the wider range of governing bodies to include academies and academy chains as well as maintained schools, and also incorporates good practice arising from the 'Trojan Horse' inquiry.

An NAHT annual conference resolution in 2014 led us to push for an update to this document to protect  schools leaders, and members may find it useful to take this to their governing body for formal adoption, and to adopt the recommended NGA code of conduct for governors.

The Local Government Association has also put its name to this new version so that school leaders should expect local authorities to support the recommended approach to school governance set out in this.
