School capability procedures

The purpose of capability procedures is to support members of staff in fully performing their duties and to address issues of under-performance on a formal basis. The aim is to deal with those cases where, despite appropriate management support (normally provided through the appraisal procedure) the employee is lacking in key areas of ability, skill, competence or knowledge and is consequently unable to carry out their required duties to an acceptable standard.

These advice documents have been created to help support staff members in following fair capability procedures to ensure support for school staff and a consistent and good experience of education for pupils.
