£4million package to increase numbers of Welsh-medium teachers

As reported in Wales Online a funding package worth £4million has been announced today in a bid to address a “dire shortage” of teachers able to teach young schoolchildren through the medium of Welsh.

 

Announcing the package, Education Minister Leighton Andrews said the demand for Welsh-medium practitioners is growing as the Assembly Government’s pioneering Foundation Phase rolls out across Wales. Mr Andrews said the £4million, to be spread over the next two years, would make a “big difference” in delivering the training for early years Welsh-medium practitioners that is necessary to cope with the demand.

 

Teachers’ unions have welcomed the news of the financial package. Iwan Guy, director of the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) said: “There is a dire shortage of people able to teach through the medium of Welsh. We are always advertising for them and we get little response.
