NAHT calls for progression in supportive culture

The NAHT stresses that performance-related progression should be seen as a way of raising the status of teachers and boosting teaching standards, rather than providing a blunt instrument to punish and penalise staff who choose to work with more challenging pupils.

Education Committee report: 'Great teachers...'

We fully endorse the Committee's recognition that the quality of teaching is the essential driver of standards in our education system. Other factors pale almost into insignificance by comparison. We need a renewed focus in this area. It means a change of rhetoric, to celebrate rather than condemn the profession; it means a closer look at recruitment, better training and competitive rewards. Need we mention that cutting people's pay and pensions is unlikely to help?

Hutton Review of Fair Pay: Final Report

Hutton produced an interim report in December 2010 which indicated his initial thinking on some of the issues, including the pay multiple and the pay cap linked to the Prime Ministers salary. He also introduced the definition of fairness in pay as the due desert for discretionary effort which delivers desired results; reward should match the employee's actions and contributions.
The final report was published on 15 March 2011 and can be accessed via the Treasury website.

Head teachers' value must be reflected in pay

School leaders union, the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) has welcomed Will Hutton's recognition of the value of head teachers in his review of fair pay in the public sector launched today (Tuesday March 15) but the association also warned that proposals to disclose salaries may put them in a uniquely difficult position.

Publishing Staff Salaries will not improve schools

The Government's plan to publish the salaries and sickness levels of school staff captures attention at the expense of results: a largely pointless endeavour with minimal impact on standards. It might, however, increase pay inflation in the public sector.

Unfilled posts leave profession on knife-edge

Figures shows that a third of head teacher posts in the Primary sector were reported unfilled after an advertisement in 2009/10 compared with 26% in 2008/9. The absence of a permanent, substantive head interrupts a school's development. High re-advertisement rates cause significant additional expenditure for schools as well as extra uncertainty for staff, pupils and parents and difficulties for succession planning.
