''Speak up!'' equalities minister tells girls

In the special edition of the NAHT magazine, Leadership Focus, Ms Featherstone says: If you're interested in something, do it. And inside school and outside, have conversations, let people hear your voice. If you don't speak up, people won't know what you're thinking. You might have the best ideas in the world, but if you don't put them out there to be agreed and disagreed with, they can't be promoted and no one will know what's in your heart.

A011 Suspension Guidance for Managers

The suspension of an employee is widely regarded as a neutral act but it is not as it can have such a serious impact on an employee that it should not be carried out without very careful consideration of the circumstances and the possible alternatives. Although not a neutral act suspension is not a disciplinary sanction.

This is advice for members from NAHT Assure on how to deal with suspension of employees.

A009 Fixed-term and temporary employees

The flexible appointment of teachers and other staff to cover the different situations that a school faces is an important management tool. However, the introduction of legislation to cover the employment of staff on fixed term and temporary contracts has meant that schools now have to be very clear in the reasoning for the use of such contracts to employ staff.
This guidance is intended to identify good practice relating to the use of fixed term, temporary contracts.

Use of SIPs for Performance Management

There is currently some confusion as to the role of the School Improvement Partner (SIP) in relation to Head Teacher performance management (PM). Regulations put in place under the previous government specify that the governing body must take advice from an external adviser when undertaking performance management of the head teacher. All local authorities were required to put in place SIPs and, when these were appointed, the governing body had to use the SIP as the external adviser.

Education Bill - Exclusions and Behaviour

The Bill reforms the process for reviews of permanent exclusions. It also repeals the duty on schools to give 24 hours' written notice of a detention to parents, and the duty on all schools to enter into a behaviour and attendance partnership with other schools in their area.

The survey, by the Sutton Trust, revealed that the profession is united in its belief that there is not enough freedom for schools to sack failing teachers.

Thousands of great leaders in state schools

There are tens of thousands of great leaders in education. Overwhelmingly, they are attracted by the chance to make a difference to children's lives. The most important step the government can take to keep the great leaders it has and attract new talent is to develop a system of accountability that is fair, firm and accurate - which rewards schools for the difference they make.

Unfilled posts leave profession on knife-edge

Figures shows that a third of head teacher posts in the Primary sector were reported unfilled after an advertisement in 2009/10 compared with 26% in 2008/9. The absence of a permanent, substantive head interrupts a school's development. High re-advertisement rates cause significant additional expenditure for schools as well as extra uncertainty for staff, pupils and parents and difficulties for succession planning.

Women in Headship

With the headteacher recruitment crisis looming Meg Maunder and Eve Warren look at the reasons why Women are under-represented in the role.
