What governing bodies can expect from head teachers and what head teachers can expect from governing bodies

NAHT, the National Governance Association (NGA), the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), and the Local Government Association (LGA) have collaborated to produce a new edition of this popular guidance document.

The latest edition has been updated to reflect the growing number of schools that are governed as part of multi-academy trusts as well as to emphasise the importance of diversity on the governing board. It also includes reference to the revised DfE governance handbook and competency frameworks for governors and clerks.

The paper has been broken down into four key areas: the respective roles of governance and management, developing and supporting the governing board, effective ways of working, and understanding the organisation and engaging with stakeholders. 

Members may find it useful to take this to their governing body for formal adoption, alongside the new Governance Handbook and Competency Framework, released by the Department for Education, earlier this year.
