Who can join NAHT Edge?

People with responsibilities beyond their own classroom and who need support with balancing classroom activities and school management. Check if you’re eligible.

I’m an assistant head. Should I join NAHT Edge or NAHT?

The choice is yours. As an assistant head, you’re eligible to be a member of either organisation, NAHT and NAHT Edge both provide union membership suited to assistant head teachers, but differ in the career stage they focus on and how their services are delivered.

NAHT concentrates on whole-school leadership matters, whilst NAHT Edge has an emphasis on curriculum and pedagogy, plus support if you are leading a department, subject, or year.

Both forms of membership offer tailored face-to-face small-group training courses.

How much does membership cost?

£13.50 per month (£162 per year), payable by direct debit. There are also options for part time, overseas and retired ‘life’ members. If you'd like to join NAHT Edge, or you'd like to find out more about whether it's for you, complete this short form and we will be in touch shortly.

I work part time. Can I get a reduction on my membership fees?

Yes. Anybody who works 0.6FTE or less is eligible for a 40 per cent reduction.

When does my membership start?

It starts immediately. Once your application is successfully submitted you’re protected from that point. 

I want to transfer from NAHT to NAHT Edge. What should I do?

To transfer your membership, you'll need your NAHT membership number. Simply call us on 01444 472414 and we'll transfer your membership right away

NAHT members wishing to join are able to transfer membership as long as they meet the following criteria:

  • are eligible for membership of NAHT Edge; and
  • are not part-way through proceedings with an NAHT officer, regional officer or solicitor. If you're part-way through proceedings, the matter must be concluded in NAHT membership and your NAHT subscription must continue to be paid. 

Once your application has been successfully submitted, we'll activate your NAHT Edge membership. We'll also manage the closure of your NAHT membership with effect from the day before you joined NAHT Edge. Your NAHT direct debit instruction will be suspended so that no further NAHT fees are collected.

I need my NAHT membership number to transfer my NAHT membership to NAHT Edge. What should I do?

If you don't have your NAHT membership number, simply email us at membersupport@nahtedge.org.uk providing your full name, date of birth and home postcode to request your membership number.

Can I get tax relief on my membership and if so, how?

I’d like to become a member, but I’m currently with another union. What do I need to do?

Your membership will start the moment we complete your application. Once you’ve joined, we recommend you send an email to your existing union advising them you wish to cancel your membership. Please note that every union has different terms and conditions about cancelling membership, so check with your current union for details. We’d advise you not to allow any gaps in union cover between memberships.

My school is based on a British Forces Posted Overseas (BFPO) base overseas. Can I join?

Yes. And you’ll only pay the UK rate.

Why has NAHT launched NAHT Edge?

Teachers need the best support possible if they’re to reach their own potential and help each of their students to flourish. Our research shows that those with responsibilities beyond their own classroom need professional association and union services tailored to their specific needs, delivered in a way that suits them.  

Will I receive full trade union protection, representation and legal support?

Yes. NAHT Edge is part of NAHT, so you’ll receive support that’s underwritten by the same experienced team.

How will you handle any conflicts between individual NAHT senior leaders and NAHT Edge middle leaders?

NAHT Edge has been established to help prevent conflict between all teachers by developing middle leaders in schools to be the glue that binds staff together. However, should any issues arise between members, we will handle this as we would between NAHT members (for example, between a head teacher and their deputy). This means keeping information separate, confidential and ensuring both sides have equal levels of representation.

What will you do if government policy causes a conflict of interest between middle and senior leaders?

We don’t anticipate many such situations because our overriding concern is ultimately about what the evidence suggests is best for all learners and for education as a whole. However, should such tensions arise, we have a clear and transparent process in place that will allow decisions to be made and then communicated. 

What happens if I move from senior leadership to a middle leadership position?

It may be that you’re now only eligible for NAHT Edge rather than NAHT, so contact us at membersupport@nahtedge.org.uk to find out and arrange to be transferred. Again, remember that assistant head teachers can choose between NAHT and NAHT Edge.

I have been referred for membership and have joined. When am I likely to get my Amazon vouchers?

You will receive your Amazon vouchers within three months of us receiving your first payment. Please note, when joining you will receive a confirmation email with your membership start date and membership number. Until receipt of this email, your joining process has not been successfully completed.

I have referred a colleague. When will I receive my Amazon vouchers?

You will receive your Amazon vouchers within three months of the new member making their first payment.

I have referred a colleague and not received my Amazon vouchers. Why might this be the case?

If you’ve made a recommendation, the person you referred may have decided not to join us or may not have fully completed the joining process. Unfortunately, for data protection reasons, we cannot confirm if they have or have not taken up membership.

How do I redeem my Amazon vouchers?

Vouchers can be redeemed online at Amazon.co.uk.

I don’t know my membership number. What shall I do?

Email us at joinus@nahtedge.org.uk with your full name, school name and post code, and your date of birth. We will then supply you with your number.

I recently recommended someone who has joined, but this offer was not in place. Can I claim the vouchers retrospectively?

No, unfortunately, this offer is only valid to people joining under this scheme. See our Ts and Cs for details.

Can I defer my membership start date if I'm being referred?

Yes. When we are processing your application, simply let us know your preferred start date. Please note, the final membership start date for current referral offer is 1 January 2018. See our Ts and Cs for details.

Can I use this offer in conjunction with other membership offers?

No. New members are only eligible to apply for one promotional offer against their membership application. See our Ts and Cs for details.
