Condemnation won't improve performance

Responding to claims by new Ofsted chief, Sir Michael Wilshaw, that 5,000 school leaders are inept, the NAHT said constant castigation of a profession already under attack might make good headlines but would not lead to the ultimate goal of providing the best quality education possible for all pupils.

Use of SIPs for Performance Management

There is currently some confusion as to the role of the School Improvement Partner (SIP) in relation to Head Teacher performance management (PM). Regulations put in place under the previous government specify that the governing body must take advice from an external adviser when undertaking performance management of the head teacher. All local authorities were required to put in place SIPs and, when these were appointed, the governing body had to use the SIP as the external adviser.

The inspection system is failing, not schools

Michael Gove's sudden doubts about the validity of outstanding ratings are disturbing given the speed with which the government has rushed to exempt outstanding schools from inspection and grant them Academy status. Perhaps this soul searching about the inspection regime should have happened first?

School leaders give Ofsted notice to improve

Schools doing great work

Today's report reinforces what we already know, that the vast majority of schools are great places to be. The evidence is clear: day in and day out, children in our schools are safe, well-behaved, well-taught and making good progress. Even in the most challenging circumstances, great leadership and great teaching are transforming lives.

NAHT challenge witness statement on behaviour

The claim that head teachers regularly 'hide unruly pupils' from Ofsted is built on nothing more than anecdote. There is no evidence whatsoever that this happens. Quite the opposite: head teachers are a highly trusted profession and rightly so. Their pride in their schools means they want to be judged on what really happens. They are demanding of themselves and rigorous in their self evaluation.

Ofsted's conclusions resonate with NAHT members

Learners and teachers are enthusiastic but find the system complex. We can only be thankful that they didn't get the uptake initially projected! The report raises doubts about the capacity to expand further; a fear compounded by decisions taken by the government in recent months. It has dammed the Diploma with faint praise whilst reducing levels of centrally provided support.

Safeguarding and Ofsted Further Information

In an attempt to combat some of the uncertainties surrounding Ofsted's requirements for safeguarding, they have now produced a series of frequently asked questions which is available on the Ofsted website.

Should an inspectors understanding of the requirements appear to differ from the information listed here, please contact us and the Ofsted helpline (08456 40 40 40) immediately.

If you would like to discuss this, or other inspection issues, please contact Lesley Gannon on lesleyg@naht.org.uk.
