Informative guidance for schools: pupil premium

This paper outlines the background to the Pupil Premium, providing national statistical data demonstrating existing attainment gaps, the available funding, schools' responsibilities and accountabilities, the existing research on the Pupil Premium to improve school management of planned expenditure, and an alternative programme focused on lower attaining groups. The last section draws out the key points to support schools in meeting the demands placed upon them.

NAHT comments on Osborne's commitment to protect education funding

Russell Hobby, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), said: It's good to protect front line budgets but when the services schools rely on are slashed, this amounts to a cut in resources. Schools now have to buy in many of the services that local authorities used to supply. The real problem, however, remains the massive disparities in funding between similar schools in different parts of country.

Education Leaders' Guide to the spending review

The Review of Educational Capital has just been published, slightly later than James anticipated, as a result of his desire to test the emerging recommendations with as wide a group of interested parties as possible. The review team road-tested their ideas on a rebuild of a Doncaster secondary school destroyed by fire.

Free school funding: a level playing field?

Speaking on the 'Today' programme, Russell Hobby voiced NAHT's concern that there may not be a level playing field for all schools. He said the first free schools would only benefit about 15,000 children - while there are seven million children in the existing state schools.

Supporting a National Funding Formula

The National Association of Head Teachers welcomes the news that the government may be moving towards a national funding formula for schools.

Russell Hobby, General Secretary, comments:

"It comes as a relief that, at long last, consideration is being given to a national funding formula for schools.

The National Association of Head Teachers has maintained for a long time that only such a system for school budgets will address the inequities that now exist.

Schools will rise to the challenge

The announcements today emphasise the vital role of education in securing growth and preparing young people for the future. It is also clear that, with the inevitable cuts to local services, schools will need to do everything they can to support their communities, especially those facing social and economic difficulties.

Changes to Funding Arrangements for the 16-19 Sector
